How Bunji Travel Can Help You Build Independence by Planning a Goal-Oriented Short Break
Discover how Hayleh and Jeffery achieved their goals on a recent trip to the Sunshine Coast with Bunji Travel
Travel can assist you to achieve a variety of goals, including increased independence, building social networks or improving communication skills. Other benefits include improving your independent living skills, enhanced physical and mental wellbeing and building self confidence and self identity.
Bunji participants Hayleh and Jeffery’s recent trip to the Sunshine Coast with Bunji Travel was a valuable opportunity to develop these essential skills whilst enjoying new experiences. Accompanied by Bunji Support Worker Scott, the group explored a range of activities designed to achieve their goals.
How Bunji Travel can increase your independence
Learning how to navigate the multiple forms of transport throughout a short break is a great way to increase independence and confidence. From the Sydney Domestic Airport, to airport transfers and hire cars, Hayleh and Jeffery experienced the range of procedures and processes involved in reaching a destination. They gained practical experience in navigating different systems, following instructions, managing time efficiently and being part of group-decision making.
How Bunji Travel can increase your social networks and communication skills
Stepping outside of your regular supports and meeting new people whilst travelling is a fantastic way to build your social network and communication skills. This was exemplified through Jeffery’s experience meeting Hayleh and Scott as this was his first trip with Bunji Travel. The group spent time getting to know each other over shared dinners and learnt how to live together in a new space by sharing a three-bedroom apartment.
How Bunji Travel can tailor experiences to your own interests
On top of the funding provided by the NDIS to cover cost of living expenses, you can make the choice to pay out-of-pocket for experiences that align with your personal interests.
This was the case for Hayleh and Jeffery, as they visited the Queensland Air Museum, Sunshine Coast Ginger Factory, Australian Zoo and the Sunshine Coast Aquaduck. They paid for entrance fees, tours and other non-disability related daily expenses. The group enjoyed factory tours about ginger production, educational shows about the conservation of wildlife and tours of local landmarks.
These additional experiences allow you to personalise your short break to your interests.
