How Bunji’s supported work experience helped Stephen build skills and confidence in the animal care industry.

Stephen joined Bunji’s Launchpad (SLES) Program in February 2024, with a clear goal of breaking into the animal care industry. Stephen completed his Certificate II in Animal Studies and was eager to find work that aligned with his passion for working with animals. Alongside career aspirations, he also aimed to grow his social confidence and improve his communication skills.

Understanding the importance of hands-on experience, Launchpad worked closely with Stephen to support his journey by securing him a work experience placement at Around the Clock Dog Care, a local business that welcomed him warmly.

The Launchpad team supported Stephen by explaining the importance of reliability and helped him develop positive habits, like presenting himself neatly and communicating with confidence. Under the guidance of Around the Clock Dog Care, Stephen quickly gained hands-on experience in managing pets and learning the ins and outs of running a dog care service. From feeding routines to maintaining clean kennels and facilities, he developed essential skills such as time management, attention to detail, and proper animal handling. These experiences boosted his confidence and expanded his expertise in animal care.

One of Stephen’s biggest growth moments came when Launchpad guided him on how to communicate better with his boss. Initially unsure how to ask questions or take initiative, Stephen learned to confidently ask, "Is there anything I can do?" - a simple but effective way to demonstrate commitment and professionalism. This shift in mindset helped him become a more proactive team member and opened the door to a greater understanding of workplace dynamics.

As Stephen's confidence grew, so did his ambition. In addition to his work at Around the Clock Dog Care, Stephen set up a profile on Paw Shake, an online platform connecting pet owners with sitters and walkers. Stephen now proudly offers his services to local pet owners through the platform, gaining new clients and furthering his experience in the animal care industry.
